For most of us our jobs are our lives.
Then when something changes either in the position we hold, the company is sold, or we’re downsized in a re-organization – our self worth gets downsized too.
It’s the same when we’re successful and receiving accolades, promotions, and big bonuses. We think it’s an accurate reflection of our self-worth. As a result, true contentment remains fleeting or even elusive.
We included Fun With Dick and Jane to assist with the beliefs around the definition of success that is prevalent today. It’s time we look at the patterns and we think this movie fits the task.
Fun With Dick and Jane is a story about an upper-middle class couple who become desperate when their lives take a considerable change.
Dick Harper (Jim Carrey) has just been promoted to Vice President of Communications for the large media corporation Globodyne. The next day, he is asked to appear on the show Money Life, where host Sam Samuels and independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader dub him and all the company’s employees as “perverters of the American dream” and claim that Globodyne helps the super rich get even wealthier.
It’s clear Dick was setup to take the fall for the company. He has no idea what shenanigans were going on that put Globodyne in trouble.
As the interview continues, the company’s stock goes into a free-fall and is soon worthless, along with all the employees’ pensions, which are in Globodyne’s stock.
The company tanks, most everyone loses their jobs, local real estate prices plummet, and the job seekers flood the market. Getting another job like Dick had seems unlikely or close to impossible in their current city.
Just like Globodyne’s stock, Dick and Jane go into a free-fall too.
While the film is a comedy, it can be hard to watch their struggles to retain their home and the tactics they use to get back their treasured things.
